General
Laura Hill-Sakurai MD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Her primary interest in doctor-patient communication drives her research, teaching and clinical work. This year she is beginning an NIH career development award that compares the varied understandings of menopause that emerge from women’s experiences with the clinical discussions of midlife change. The pilot data for this grant was collected during Dr. Hill-Sakurai’s research fellowship, and focused on women’s decisions about hormone replacement therapy and complementary alternative medicine during menopause. Dr. Hill-Sakurai also trained extensively in anthropological and qualitative methodologies during her fellowship. As an educator, she works on culture in medicine, human sexuality/LGBTI issues and professionalism in the pre-doctoral curriculum. She completed a small research project on clinical sexual history-taking that guided her production of an interactive videotape used to teach sexual history-taking. Dr. Hill-Sakurai is a graduate of Ramsey Family and Community Medicine Residency in the St. Paul/Minneapolis, University of Iowa College of Medicine and Carleton College. She enjoys hiking, cooking and jewelry making.
