The Impact of Changing Public Policy on California’s Hospital Infrastructure and Children’s Hospital Outcomes, 1983 – 2000. This study was undertaken to explore the consequences of conflicting health policies and lack of statewide planning on the healthcare infrastructure and health outcomes of California’s child population. We describe and evaluate changes in hospital management and physical capacity. Then we examine the impact of those changes on children's hospital access and outcomes. The results are expected to provide guidance to the state legislature in evaluating the way health care dollars are allocated and in promulgating regulations to affect hospital infrastructure. Cultural Competence - FHOP’s website has a new link on cultural competence at the provider level. Many health and social organizations are committed to lifelong learning and practices to improve the quality of care for racially, ethnically, culturally diverse individuals and families. Incorporating and using resources on culturally competent approaches within primary care systems provides evidence-based commitment to eliminating health disparities between and among diverse groups. Upcoming EpiBC 2005 Training is scheduled!! This will be a one-day training designed for MCAH staff to learn and practice EpiBC 2005. EpiBC 2005 is a Windows-based software program for analyzing California birth certificate data based on EpiInfo, a public domain analytical software package from the Centers for Disease Control. Each participant will have a computer on which to practice and carry out a structured exercise. Features in EpiBC 2005 include many new standard reports, excellent chart and graph functions, mapping capabilities, incorporation of Microsoft Access database standards, and use of HTML for report outputs. EpiBC 2005 also incorporates the new data elements from the updated Birth Certificate. Registration for this training is available! CCS Title V Priorities As part of the California MCAH Branch Title V Needs Assessment, the California Children's Medical Services Branch performed a needs assessment for the CCS program. This resulted in the selection of three priority areasto be included in the ten MCAH priority areas submitted in the State Title V Report. The CCS priorities, as decided by the CCS stakeholders group on April 28 are:
- Expand the number of qualified providers participating in the CCS program, e.g. medical specialists, audiologists, occupational and physical therapists, and nutritionists.
- Coordinate to develop and implement a system of timely referral between mental health, developmental services, social services, special education services and CCS.
- Increase the number of family-centered medical homes for children with special health care needs and the number/percentage of CCS children who have a designated medical home.
