Collaborative Research Network The Collaborative Research Network (CRN) was established in 1984 for the purpose of conducting practice-based research in primary care settings. The CRN is one of the longest standing practice-based research networks (PBRNs) in the United States. Initially led by Diana Pettiti, MD, PhD. and then for many years by Mary Croughan, PhD., the current leadership of the CRN includes Tom Bodenheimer, MD, MPH, Margaret Handley, PhD, MPH, and Michael Potter, MD. The CRN has established close working relationships with UCSF researchers in San Francisco General Hospital’s Primary Care Research Center (most recently, Dean Schillinger, MD) as well as with many community-based physicians who have served important roles as practice representatives and as co-investigators on several projects (most recently, Ken Gjeltema, MD, Enrique Gonzalez-Mendez, MD and Eric Sanford, MD). The CRN’s general membership includes over 250 primary care clinicians in a broad range of practice settings in over 50 cities spread throughout Northern California and extending into the central coast and central valley. The CRN recently adopted a vision statement that emphasizes translational research in primary care. In the future, we hope to continue to build on our tradition of working closely and collaboratively with both academic researchers and community-based clinicians to create new knowledge and new models of care that can lead to better healthcare outcomes for patients who receive care in a broad range of clinical practice settings.
